About AAC Standard

A library of AAC symbols for people who need augmentative and alternative communication — and for everyone who helps them.

Why it exists

In AAC, consistency is everything: a child, a therapist and a parent should see the same symbol for the same concept — in the therapy room, at school and at home. Yet every app and every printed set uses different graphics. We are building AAC Standard so that one consistent symbol library exists that both people and applications can use.

How the symbols are made

Symbols are generated in a uniform graphic style and then pass through automatic classification and a quality gate (QA): every image is scored against the meaning of the word, and doubtful cases go to human moderation. Every symbol gets metadata — categories, an age group, a key color, a grammatical category — and translated names.

State of the library

The library currently holds 21061 published symbols with name translations in 9 languages, and it keeps growing — an expansion campaign towards 15,000 concepts in variants for three age groups is underway.

Who is behind it

AAC Standard is built by the team at aisay.co — a Polish company creating AAC communication tools, including the AISay app for children. The symbol library is developed as a standalone product with its own API, already used by other applications.
